Plumbing Checklist for End of Winter and to Get Ready for Spring

Here at Priced Right Plumbing, homeowners are always asking us what they can do to protect their home’s plumbing system as the New Jersey seasons change from cold and hot, and back again. We got to thinking about it and put together this basic checklist that should keep your plumbing up and running like it should as Spring approaches us. Always have a professional plumber do a service visit once or even twice each year to inspect your plumbing and make sure all is well, and that no problems are beginning to come up anywhere. This doesn’t cost a lot and can save you many times over what you do pay by preventing a problem the majority of homeowners would easily miss. Check exterior water spigots and piping for any cracking or other damage that can naturally occur when exposed to the elements year-round. Inspect all plumbing you can get to and identify any runs of pipe that are especially susceptible to freezing, such as very drafty and cold spots.  Take time to at least wrap these pipes with insulation, or if you can, spring for some good heat tape and wrap the pipes with it to prevent frozen water lines next winter. Find the water main shut-off valve and inspect it for any damage and make sure it’s not leaking at all.  If it is, then fix it or replace it with a new one of proper grade and type, or call us at Priced Right Plumbing to come out and take care of this quickly and for a lot less than you might think. Clean your gutters and downspouts, even though it’s tempting to skip this job every year unless something is clogged up so badly it forces you to do something about it.  If you don’t do this regularly, the buildup of dirt and debris will allow water to leak over the edges of the gutters and right down along your home’s foundation or cause other problems you’d be better off completely avoiding. Aim all downspouts out and away from your home’s foundation for the same reasons you keep dirt and such out of the gutters.  Your home will last much longer without foundational or other problems if you adhere to proper placement and cleaning of gutters and downspouts. There’s a lot more that can (and should) be done each time winter is coming to a close and Spring is about to come to NJ, but we’ll deal with that some other time.  Remember to call us for service work of any size for your home or business’s plumbing, heating, and air conditioning needs!
